The History of Carl Gustaf

The Carl Gustaf company was founded in 1812. First known as Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori or ‘Rifle Factory of Carl Gustaf's Town’, it was serving as a state arsenal. After the king of Sweden Karl X Gustav gave the city privileges to the town of Eskilstuna, it was thenceforth often referred to as 'Carl Gustav's town'.

In the first years of operating, the company primarily manufactured small arms for the Swedish Army, starting a long-lasting tradition of firearms making. For over two centuries Carl Gustaf has been known for many popular small arms, many of them relying on foreign design – such were for instance Mausers M94, M38, M1896 (often touted as the Swedish Mauser), the M41, and the Remington M1867 rolling block rifle. The governmental agency Försvarets Fabriksverk (FFV), the complex often referred to as FFV-Carl Gustaf, managed the factory from 1943 to 1991.

One of the biggest breakthroughs in CG weapon design happened in 1942 with the introduction of a single-shot M/42 AT anti-tank weapon for the infantry which had been used until 1944. In 1946, it was replaced by the 84 mm recoilless rifle which is still one of the most widespread anti-tank systems in use today. In the late 50s, a commercial variant of the M1986 became available under the name Carl Gustaf M63 which was in service from the late 1950s until the early to mid-1960s.

In 1970 the FFV-Carl Gustaf bought the Husquarna Group, and they took over the production of various models, such as the 1900 hunting rifle which was later upgraded to the 2000 series. The production of CG 2000 was postponed when the company purchased the rights to import the unrefined and finished rifles from Sauer. Consequently, various Sauer models were sold under the Carl Gustaf brand – Sauer 80 as Carl Gustaf 3000 and Sauer 200 as Carl Gustaf 4000. Near the turn of the century, the company started making the model 2000 once again.

From 1970 until 1985, a Swedish-made version of the G3A3 named the AK 4 was manufactured exclusively by Carl Gustaf in Eskilstuna. It was succeeded by the AK 5 assault rifle in 1986, being the primary weapon of the Swedish Army at the time.

In the 90s, the Calf Gustaf was under the parentage of Celsius Group which was bought by Saab AB in 1999. Later, the United Defense Industries took over the heavy weapons department. Nowadays the company consists of Swedish BAE Systems AB and Saab AB with British BAE Systems and Saab Bofors Dynamics being subsidiary divisions. The Saab company specializes in the production of fighter systems, submarines, and ground combat weapons. With the fourth generation of the 84mm recoilless gun – the CG A4 – they are keeping the trademark alive, staying loyal to the Carl Gustaf tradition of high-quality weaponry.

Carl Gustaf 1900 Rifle Review

Carl Gustaf 1900 is a push-feed bolt-action rifle that was manufactured from 1967 up until 1979. It was first known as Husqvarna 1900, however, when the FFV purchased the manufacturing department, the production was moved to Carl Gustafs Gevärsfaktori. The rifle had been eventually succeeded by the Carl Gustaf 2000 model.

The receiver which is made of durable steel houses a bolt with two large locking lugs and a Sako-style extractor. There are four distinct lengths of bolt travel depending on the caliber, however, the action was only made in one length. As a result, the bolt travel and magazine were adjusted to the length of the cartridge. Four drilled and tapped holes on the top of the receiver are used for scope mounting purposes. The rifle is equipped with a single-stage trigger with a pre-set pull weight of 1500 g (3.3lbs). Additionally, a set-trigger option is available. The safety lever that blocks the trigger and the bolt is positioned on the right upper side of the receiver and is easily reachable with a thumb. A hooded sight is installed at the front and a flip-down adjustable sight on the rear end of the barrel. CG 1900 has an internal, hinged floorplate magazine that can hold up to five cartridges.

Several 1900 copies and variations can be found on the market such as Antonio Zoli 1900 or Viking Arms 1900 which are both based on the original Husqvarna action design. Antonio Zoli even purchased the rights to the design in later years to keep the production of the 1900 model alive.

It should be noted that naming confusion might arise when comparing CG 1900 and CG 1896 with 1900 markings (the year of production) on the receiver. You can learn more on the topic of the Carl Gustaf receiver markings in our article which is available here:

There are two terms found for similar thing: quick release scope mounts and quick detach scope mounts. Term quick release scope mounts is used mostly in Europe and quick detach scope mounts is used mainly in USA, although they mean the same thing. With these terms we describe a scope mount that can be quickly removed from the rifle in the field without using any tools and quickly attached back on the rifle when needed.

Main advantages:

  • possibility to use multiple scopes on the rifle,
  • easy transportation of the scope and the rifle separately,
  • if scope fails, it is possible to immediately detach it and use iron sights.

FIXED vs DETACHABLE scope mounts

Fixed scope mounts are mounted to the rifle with screws and sometimes even with glue. This means that it is impossible to attach or detach the scope mount using bare hands without using tools. It also means that they are not meant for constantly being attached on or detached off the rifle. Once you screw the mount on the rifle, it normally stays there for a longer period of use.

Detachable scope mounts offer possibility to attach or detach them without using any tools. This is extremely handy while transporting the rifle and the scope separately and it also offers multiple solutions of different optics on the same rifle. Detachable scope mounts can be attached or detached from the rifle in a matter of seconds, using bare hands.

DETACHABLE vs REPEATABLE scope mounts

It is important to know and understand expressions “detachable” and “repeatable” while talking about scope mounts. Term detachable scope mounts implies scope mounts that can be quickly attached or detached without using any tools. However, when you detach this kind of mount and attach it back on the rifle, it is recommended to zero the rifle before using it again. Procedure of detaching and again attaching the mount will probably need a sighting in before next shooting, because mount will not be secured on the rifle in the perfectly same position and conditions as it was before detaching it off the rifle.

On the contrary, repeatable scope mounts are most sophisticated mounts. These scope mounts are also detachable, however – they provide removing scope from the rifle and attaching it back again without zeroing the rifle every time. This means that they are made more precisely and that they are offering a possibility of using different optical sights / scope on the same rifle. These mounts are ideal for hunters who can use optical and iron sights interchangeably, depending on the needs in different situations. With the repeatable scope mounts, it is useful to keep them oiled as well as the upper part of the rifle, so that repeatability is more ensured. With a touch of oil, the repeatability might be better, because parts of the mount will always return to their previous locations.

Different types of repeatable scope mounts:

  • Pivot mounts,
  • Dentler mounts,
  • Picatinny repeatable mounts,
  • 12 mm dovetail repeatable mounts (for break barrel rifles, such as Steyr Duett, Blaser B750, Fair Combi, Fair SLX 800, Bettinsoli rifles, etc.),
  • Original repeatable mounts, made by manufacturers of rifles for their rifles (Blaser mount, Sauer SUM mount, Mauser M03 mount, Steyr Monoblock mount, etc.).

TIP OFF / ROLL OFF vs SLIDE ON mounts

Nowadays, there are a whole lot of different possibilities, made for attaching riflescopes on the rifles. There are also a lot of different expressions, having the same meaning. It is good to know that tip off and roll off mounts are basically the same thing. They represent quick release scope mounts for dovetails and rails which can be rolled or tipped off the rail vertically to the side of the rail. On the contrary, there are also slide on mounts available on the market. They represent quick release scope mounts that can be slided on or off the rail or dovetail from front or rear side of the rail / dovetail. All of these expressions are mainly used for separate rings that can be attached to the rails / dovetails. As far as functioning the rifle, it does not matter which one of these mounts you choose – tip / roll off or slide on mounts. If they are installed correctly, they are all going to work. However, the main difference between them is the principle of attaching them on rails on dovetails.
